What True Agreement Really Means
ICS Daily Devotions
Amos 3:3 (NKJV) Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?
As a first step, two believers in a covenant marriage should diligently seek God’s will, pray the prayer of consecration, wait upon the Lord, and receive a Word from Him before making a joint decision, because they are one flesh and one team.
Once we have taken this crucial first step of knowing God’s will, we can pray the prayer of agreement, asking God for help and provision. This way, the devil cannot divide and conquer when tribulation arises, because we have sought the Lord and are both in agreement that we have heard from Him! Praying the prayer of agreement is also a step toward harmonising and being in symphony after receiving the Word from God.
Agape love is shown in a crisis when one spends time, effort, and resources to help their spouse, including praying together. Because they have taken time to talk about their vision, goals, passions, and lives, they will pray together when they face a crisis. They agree on many things because they have invested time in talking through matters in their lives. Couples who pray together stay together because a crisis brings them even closer.
However, we cannot pray the prayer of agreement with an unbeliever. Therefore, we shouldn’t partner with an unbeliever in business because their values and principles are different. They will probably seek out mediums, idols, and geomancy for help, and you will be left without someone to pray the prayer of agreement regarding the business.
2 Corinthians 6:14-15 (NKJV) Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
This is why singles should seek godly partners, someone who shares the same teachings, values, and principles. Pray now for a future spouse who will journey with us faithfully throughout life!
It also helps when a couple—married or dating—attend the same church. Sharing the same spiritual home gives us common teaching, aligned theological convictions, and a unified foundation for building a Christ centred marriage.
Frank, honest, candid, and upfront discussion is needed between a couple to share their thoughts on the matter at hand before they pray. While the wife ought to submit to the husband, one should not just agree out of submission if they disagree with the decision in one’s mind and heart. Mutual submission is necessary for the prayer agreement.
There must be a harmonisation in the heart when we agree with the other person, which means your spirits are in sync. A prayer of agreement is not possible when one person prays in faith while the other secretly harbours doubt or focuses on the natural circumstances. Just as an instrument must be in tune to create beautiful music, two believers must be in perfect accord concerning the specific outcome they are seeking.
Reflection: Have you and your prayer partner taken the time to discuss your beliefs, expectations, and desired outcome before praying? Is there something you need to talk through so you can be in harmony?
