Right Attitude Of Worship
Luke 7:36-38 Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.
Worship is an outflowing of our whole being—spirit, soul, body—and an overflow of our understanding of God; it is opening our hearts to His love. The woman in this passage was commended by Jesus, and we need to learn from her for she was a great worshipper with the right heart attitude.
So how should we approach God as a worshipper? First, we bring Him our very best. The woman brought an alabaster box of perfume—an extremely expensive gift and the best that she could give to Jesus. Second, she came to give. When we come to worship, we must come with an attitude of giving instead of receiving. You come to give to God and to those you are ministering to, and instead of getting anything from God and from man, you give God all the Glory. Third, we come unashamedly. The woman stood behind Jesus weeping, and started washing His feet with her tears and wiping them with her hair. She was a sinner and a prostitute who had no place in the Pharisee’s house, yet she risked her life because she loved Jesus and was unashamed to worship Him with her tears. Neither did she feel condemned in the presence of Jesus despite other people’s disapproval of her.
Luke 7:47,50 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”…Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”
We then see the results of her actions: her sins, which were many, were forgiven because she loved much, and Jesus said, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”
Worshipping God will ease our torment and confusion and usher in life, clarity of where we are going, accompanied by peace. Let’s learn from the woman and worship God with the right attitude.
