Reflections on Bird Watching
ICS Daily Devotions
Matthew 6:25-26 (NKJV) “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
What is disturbing your peace of mind? What are your dominant thoughts? Are you concerned about economic volatility and job security?
Encouraging someone who is anxious or worried is never easy. Their thoughts often cycle through all possible negative scenarios. They won’t find peace of mind until the issue is resolved, or someone reassures them that it has been settled. Usually, it takes someone greater, with more resources, influence and power than they themselves to provide that reassurance. There is no one better to give us assurance than the Heavenly Father Himself, the Creator of Heaven and Earth. Therefore, hearing from God fills us with faith and hope.
The Swedes know that when there are many berries in the forest, it signals a long and cold winter ahead. This is God’s way of providing food for the birds in preparation for winter, since berries are their main source of nourishment. He ensures these birds won’t starve during the upcoming long, cold season. Even the world’s richest person cannot feed all the birds, but since creation, God has faithfully never ceased to feed His creation.
Jesus invites us to reflect on the Heavenly Father’s love when we feel anxious about life. He urges us not to focus on our circumstances but to trust in our Heavenly Father’s love. The issue for many Christians is that they too often see God as powerless and small in their hearts or in their eyes. Who is the Heavenly Father to you? How great is God to you?
Aren’t you and I more valuable than the birds? If you feel anxious about tomorrow, go for a walk and watch the birds. If they have enough to eat, you will certainly be provided for because you are priceless in God’s eyes!
Philippians 4:19 (NKJV) And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Reflection: Are you trying to provide for yourself instead of trusting in God’s provision? How does recognising your priceless worth in God’s sight affect the way you face fear or insecurity?
