Life of Victory Over Sin
1 JOHN 3:6-9 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practises righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
This is indeed a powerful statement! It states that those who are born of God does not and cannot sin! How can we do this practically?
Firstly, we have to know that we are new creations in Christ in order for us to live a life of victory over sin. We have to constantly renew our minds with the Word.
Heb 4:12 For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing apart of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Secondly, 1 John 3:6 tells us that we have to abide in (yield) Him. When we are born again and we yield to God, there is the grace of God that strengthens our hearts to resist temptations.
2 Peter 1:2-6 Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 according as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and GODLINESS, through the knowledge of Him who has called us to glory and virtue, 4 through which He has given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, so that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 But also in this very thing, bringing in all diligence, filling out your faith with virtue, and with virtue, knowledge; 6 and with knowledge self-control, and with self-control, patience, and with patience, godliness,
When we are new creations in Christ, we “should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind…” Ephesians 4:17 meaning we should not cease to care, be alienated from God, be ignorant of God’s way or have hardened hearts. If we want to live a practical life of victory over sin, then we have to actively do the following:
- Know who you are in Christ by renewing your mind constantly with the Word;
- Be honest with God in prayer;
- Trust God to grant you the strength to walk in victory;
- Be accountable to someone.
