Knowing God

The Greeks sought after God through philosophical speculation and mystical experience. We are also influenced in this enlightenment or rationalism period which challenges the authority of the Bible or the Church but places confidence in the reason and conscience of the individual enquirer.

Instead of bringing us to a better knowledge of God, rationalism hinders us. This is because the individual will likely stay in the mode of religion rather than a relationship with God. While it is good to have a strong intellectual mind, we still have to return to simple faith in God in order to please Him.

Hebrews 11:1,6,8 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 6. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.8. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.

Adam and Eve knew God because they walked with God. However, sin brought about a separation and God started to reveal Himself to man again through His covenant names.

Gen 14:19-20, 22 And he blessed him and said: ” Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth;20 And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all. 22.But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,

God Most High is Hebrew is El Elyon.

Abram’s faith was that God Most High is the Possessor of heaven and earth! He believes that God is able to deliver his enemies into his hand and He is also his provider. When Abram took his 318 men to pursue the king’s armies to rescue Lot, he did it with the faith that El Elyon, the God Most High was with Him! Abram not only rescued Lot but took back all the women and the people as well as all the goods.

God is the same today, yesterday and forever. He is still El Elyon, the God Most High. Will you trust Him to be your El Elyon from henceforth?
