How to be Led by the Holy Spirit
ICS Daily Devotions
1 Corinthians 4:14 (NKJV) But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
We are all made up of three parts: spirit, soul, and body. If we want to know how the Holy Spirit speaks to us or leads us, we will need to identify ourselves in the spirit being, or our “spirit man”.
Our physical body enables us to interact with the physical world through our five senses. The body will behave according to what the soul or the “spirit man” dictates it to do. The body is temporal, corruptible, and mortal. Unfortunately, many of us put so much attention on our bodies and into developing our souls that we have neglected the “spirit man”. If we are overly driven by the information that our senses feed us, we may subject ourselves to unnecessary or unfounded fear. This is why we must learn to tune into what the Spirit of God is saying to our “spirit man” because He alone is omniscient. This way, we can be led by His peace rather than by our senses.
The Holy Spirit has been assigned to help every believer, and if we learn to be led by the Spirit, we are tapping into our helper, the Holy Spirit. For example, we may experience a kind of peace in our hearts that comes from the Holy Spirit to assure us that all is fine on a certain issue despite the negative reports we hear. On the other hand, we may sense an urgency not to act on an issue because we feel an uneasiness in our spirit, which comes as a warning even though everything in the natural seems normal.
Our soul comprises our mind, intellect, will, emotions, and personality. The soul is self-centred because it is used to reigning in and dictating our lives. Therefore, it can hinder us from hearing clearly from God or even trusting the leading of the Holy Spirit due to our scepticism. For those who are used to letting their souls rule and reign in their lives, if they allow their emotions to get out of control, it can lead to chaos in their lives. We face a similar struggle when we attempt to allow the Holy Spirit to lead us and grant us wisdom. Therefore, we need to get the soul to quiet down so that we can tune into what the Spirit of God is speaking to our hearts.
We grieve the Holy Spirit when we react in the flesh or fall into temptation. However, believers who are born again have a redeemed personality if we allow the Holy Spirit to empower us to reign in the work of the flesh, but we must also renew our minds with the Word of God so that it will not hinder our understanding of the person of the Holy Spirit.
