2 Kings 7:1 (NKJV) Then Elisha said, “Hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord: ‘Tomorrow about this time a seah of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.’
When we are faced with a difficult situation, we mustn’t be rash in our decision making or be impatient to wait upon the Lord because the chance of making a wrong decision is very high, especially when we have not consecrated our plans to God and gotten His blessings.
The best way to walk out of it is to place our faith in God. God and His Word are One. Therefore, whatever He has spoken to us personally, He will bring it to pass, but the key is that He has spoken to us personally. You will know without a doubt that He has spoken to you because it is something that is personal. God knows about your struggle because you have shared with Him through your prayers, or it could be just a sigh, complaint or even venting of frustration throughout the day.
In this passage, God was aware of the plight faced by the people of Israel, and He sent forth His prophet, Elisha, to comfort and assure them of the breakthrough that would come the next morning. While in the Old Testament, God sent His prophets to tell His people what to expect, to warn and to guide them, as New Testament believers, we have the Bible as our guide and a means for God to speak to us. Therefore, the safest guide for us is the Word of God and the witness of the Holy Spirit to lead or guide us in our decision. We need to get a book, chapter, and verse from God as a form of promise or an answer. The current role of the prophet in the fivefold ministries—if one were to prophesy over you—might just be to confirm what you have already heard from the Lord.
We are born again and are the children of the living God, and God will speak directly to His children when we seek His face. We should seek God for His opinion and wisdom on a particular situation. We have the Holy Spirit as our guide, teacher, and He will give us a witness through the spirit man and teach us all things because the same Spirit of God that was upon Elisha is living within us. We can perceive and receive instructions from the Holy Spirit just as Elisha did. The most important thing for us to do is to train our spirit man to be receptive to the leading and instructions of the Holy Spirit.
- Proverbs 16:9 (NKJV) A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.
