God Came to Seek and Save Us
2 Samuel 9:3 Then the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, to whom I may show the kindness of God?” And Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan who is lame in his feet.
Human covenants cannot be annulled. Therefore, if it is a covenant established by God, He will not go back on His words because of His holiness.
Psalm 105:8 He remembers His covenant forever, the word which He commanded, for a thousand generations
There is a parallel to be drawn between David and Jonathan’s covenant and God’s covenant with Abraham. David is a type of Christ. Instead of destroying all his enemies’ descendants, because David honoured his covenant with Jonathan, he went in search of Mephibosheth in order to extend grace to him.
Meanwhile, Mephibosheth was in Lo Debar, in fear that David would send people to kill him anytime, but when he saw chariots coming, it wasn’t judgment that came knocking at the door but unmerited grace! We were in a similar situation because sin and the penalty of sin kept all of us in bondage in fear of the impending judgment.
Galatians 3:17-18 This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.
The law tells us what is right and wrong, what is sin and its penalty which is death. The law was given 430 years after God gave Abraham a promise that through him all the nations of the earth will be blessed. Nobody is able to annul what God has promised Abraham through a covenant established to send forth the Messiah to save the world.
Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.
We, Gentiles, were once the uncircumcised ones and referred to as a people who had no covenant with God, as compared to the Jews who had a covenant with God through the Abrahamic covenant followed by the Mosaic covenant. We were once without God and without hope in this world and living a life very similar to Mephibosheth’s in Lo Debar, but praise be to God that He came to seek and to save those who are lost and to restore everything to us!
