Don’t Grieve The Holy Spirit

Heb 12:9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?

John 4:24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

When God created Adam, He breathed into him and Adam became a living being. The body is temporal but the spirit is an eternal being. God is the one who gave us life and our spirit being, and because He is the Father of spirits, He will rebuke and correct us in our heart, spirit or inner man.

Jesus is the Lord of our lives because He has purchased us with His blood and we belong to Him, and so we submit to His Lordship. Learning to submit is a form of protection for us and it helps us to grow spiritually.

2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

God’s primary way of chastising us is through the Word as we do our daily quiet time. The Holy Spirit is also at work in prompting and guiding us when we are about to do something wrong, and He is grieved when we ignore His leading and guidance. On the other hand, we will also feel disappointed or dealt with when He corrects or rebukes us for a wrong attitude, action and behaviour, but if God’s opinion of us matters, we will choose to submit. In general, some things that we should refrain from include lying, sinning in anger, dwelling in bitterness, and speaking corrupt words rather than words that edify and build others up.

Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

God sent the Holy Spirit dwell in us to empower us to live godly lives. His chastening is done out of love, so let us choose to submit to Him, because when we are defiant and refuse to listen, we will reap what we sow in our flesh.

Gal 6:7-8 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
