Assurance of Victory
PSALMS 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
King David wrote this Psalm, faced many challenges and had many enemies in his lifetime. Like David besides having many high moments, we will also walk through many valleys in our lifetime. Praise God, it does not say that we will die in that valley, but we will walk through the valley of the shadow of death. Yet we shall not fear evil because God is with us and His rod and staff comfort us.
For example, if we were to receive a bad medical report, we will be challenged emotionally and mentally. Anxiety will wear us down if our mind is not able to find rest in God. Our soul cannot rest while we play out different scenarios in our mind. But when we understand that God laid down His life for us unconditionally, then there should be no fear in our lives except reverential fear of God’s holiness. Knowing God’s perfect love for us casts out all kinds of fear tormenting us. God will be there to comfort us in our valleys. For Christians, death has lost its sting! Christ has given us victory over death and Hades, His everlasting covenant ensures that we will have an everlasting relationship with God eternally!
PSALMS 23:5-6 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.
When David was anointed as king and walked in God’s way, he was greatly blessed. The secret is dwelling in the house of the Lord and walking in God’s perfect will. Do not veer left or right but listen to His voice.
David had many enemies including King Saul who tried to kill him on many occasions. He walked through many valleys. But David truly experienced God’s faithfulness because when he rested in God’s house, God gave him peace from all the enemies around him when he did not stray from God.
We too are invited to eat at the King of kings’ table. We have a better covenant built on better promises in Christ. If God honoured His covenants (Mosaic and Abrahamic) with David, how much more will He honour His everlasting covenant established through the blood of Jesus with us. Because of this covenant, we have assurance of victory and are able to face our fears and enemies!
