We Have Been Restored
2 Samuel 9:7-8,10-11 So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.” Then he bowed himself, and said, “What is your servant, that you should look upon such a dead dog as I?” …. You therefore, and your sons and your servants, shall work the land for him, and you shall bring in the harvest, that your master’s son may have food to eat. But Mephibosheth your master’s son shall eat bread at my table always.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. Then Ziba said to the king, “According to all that my lord the king has commanded his servant, so will your servant do.” “As for Mephibosheth,” said the king, “he shall eat at my table like one of the king’s sons.”
Mephibosheth called himself a dead dog in the presence of King David. He felt worthless having lived as a refugee from the time his caretaker picked him up and ran for their lives. He was poor and crippled, grew up in a place of refuge, had a son Machir and living in constant fear of David.
All of a sudden, he was in the palace and his status changed from being a refugee to an adopted son! Instead of being tormented and executed for being a descendent of Saul, he was shown grace, mercy, and restoration of everything that belongs to him because of David’s covenant with Jonathan. David assured him of his love and kindness, and that he would be treated like one of his own sons, eating at his table daily.
Mephibosheth spoke of David’s grace and how he had provided for him and allowed him to eat at the king’s table.
2 Samuel 19:28 For all my father’s house were but men doomed to death before my lord the king, but you set your servant among those who eat at your table. What further right have I, then, to cry to the king?
When Mephibosheth was eating at the king’s table, he was at peace, he had protection, favour, provision and relationship. Mephibosheth was no longer poor when David restored everything to him and he ate at the king’s table daily. This gives us a picture of God’s grace, mercy and covenant watching over what He has promised.
