Be Of One Mind
1 Pet 3:8-9 Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; 9not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.
It is very important for Christian couples to be of one heart and one mind in good and bad times. They also need to be of one mind that the Word of God is the final authority to guide our lives and marriages.
If Jesus is truly the Lord of our lives, it should be easy to resolve any conflict due to differences and arguments. Experience shows that amongst couples who experienced challenges in their marriages, whether due to differences in opinions, arguments, fights or extramarital affairs, those who usually turned around and had their marriage restored are those who acknowledged the Lordship of Christ, the authority of the Word in their lives and were willing to submit to counsel. Because the very foundation of their relationship is founded on Christ’s love, they love each other and have a desire to restore the relationship, and they will recover from the challenges through their willingness to walk out the truth in their lives, given the right teaching and with the help of a spiritual counselor.
2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
However, if the couple does not accept these terms or if one party refuses to yield to them, it will be very difficult for the counselor and even the Holy Spirit to do anything because nobody is able to change the will of man except for that person. Those couples who are individualistic, who refuse to give up their rights and terms will normally end up tearing each other down and nobody will win except the devil.
Many couples attend Christian marriage courses after they receive Christ because they want to live out the teaching, values and principles that Christ teaches. When we have the same teaching and each person practises the truth, the marriage can only get better and not worse, and when a couple begins to submit to the Lord, His Word and the Holy Spirit, the marriage will grow from strength to strength!
