Knowing God’s Will In New Testament Times

Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

In Old Testament times, only the prophet, the king and the high priest had the Spirit of God upon them. People could not meet with God because of the sin issue. We, on the other hand, have been redeemed by the blood of Christ. Hidden in Christ, we have the imputed righteousness and can approach the throne of grace in time of need. We also have the full council found in the Bible and Holy Spirit living in us, so God can speak to us personally. Thus, God will only confirm the promise and calling that He’s given us through a prophetic utterance or word of wisdom — we are not to run around looking for prophetic utterance from speakers. Being given the right to be children of God means we should seek the help of our Heavenly Father.

We cannot be bold unless we fully understand that God has accepted us based on our position in Christ and come to a position of trust and rest in the finished work of Jesus. It is a throne filled with God’s unmerited favour, a place where we can seek the wisdom, strength and grace of God which He has promised us, but we are to quieten ourselves, position ourselves to listen and act on what we have heard from God.

James 1:5-6 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.

You might want to hear what the Holy Spirit is saying when you present what you have read in the Bible to the Lord. If you have consecrated your plans to God and gotten a promise from Him in the Bible, check through the witness of the Holy Spirit. If it is not from God, there will be a check or uneasiness about the plan, but if it is from God, there will be the peace or ease in the witness of the Spirit through your spirit being that it is something that God wants you to do.
