Guard Your Thought Life

Guard Your Thought Life
ICS Daily Devotions

Philippians 4:7-8 (NKJV) and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

The key to keeping God’s peace in our hearts and minds is meditating on God’s Word. We also need to be vigilant in guarding our thought life against anything that could lead us into depression. God’s peace will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus as we meditate on His Word, especially His promises.

The Greek word for “guard” is a military term meaning to surround and protect a garrison or a city.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NKJV) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

‭‭We need to take down the stronghold in our minds and cast down every argument and high thing that exalts itself. That is taking every thought captive. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

In her book “Up: Writing A New Chapter of Joy and Laughter”, Beth Jones wrote that if we read the opening passage from the bottom up, we will notice that “everything begins with a thought and then moves into an argument or a high thing that is set against the knowledge of God. And finally, that thought moves into a stronghold. For example, depression is a stronghold, but it doesn’t start as a stronghold. It starts with a thought… The good news is that this sequence can establish a stronghold of joy in our lives in the same way. For example, if we take a thought of joy and let it become an argument or an imagination that agrees with God’s Word, we can argue for this truth and imagine ourselves full of joy. Then, as we continue to do this, in time, joy will become a stronghold in our lives!”

When we are fearful, our minds meditate on the unknown—possible negative scenarios that may never happen. However, our brain can think of only one thing at a time. Therefore, we need to determine what the brain thinks about. Rubbish in, rubbish out. Stop the devil from inflicting fear through your thought life. Guard your thoughts and close the door to him by not entertaining those thoughts.

Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV) You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.

Biblical truth is unchanging, whereas facts and circumstances will change. Therefore, we need to maintain the soundness of our minds by meditating on the Word of God, focusing on it, and believing what it says rather than the circumstances.

Reflection: How proactive are you in guarding your thought life? In what ways is God leading you to focus on His goodness rather than on circumstances?
