He Guides Us Through His Word
ICS Daily Devotions
Psalm 119:105 (NKJV) Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV) All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
The secret of David’s success is walking with God and seeking His guidance at all times. The same God who spoke to David would like to speak to you and guide you too. Today, God primarily speaks to us through the Bible and the leading of the Holy Spirit.
God will speak to us through the Bible during our time of devotion with Him. We will know without a doubt that God has spoken to us when we receive a Word of confirmation from Him, because we have been talking to Him and He knows our thoughts.
In the old days, the lamp could cast a light about a metre in diameter. Therefore, people needed to be guided by the light ahead as they walked. Likewise, the Bible, which is the inspired Word of God, will lead and guide us in our lives when we consecrate our plans to Him.
We are very blessed to have the full counsel of God found in the 66 books of the Bible. It is canonised and fully inspired by God. God will use the Bible to lead, guide, correct, rebuke, and instruct us. The Holy Spirit will also bring to our remembrance the Word and God’s promises, but He cannot do so unless we have spent time reading God’s Word. We can know God when we read His Word because He and His Word are one.
We should inquire of the Lord, as David did, whether something is a good idea or God’s idea, especially before making any major decisions, when faced with uncertain circumstances, or at a crossroads in our lives, and tap into God’s wisdom.
Jesus is the Lord of our lives. Therefore, it is crucial for us to pursue, articulate, plan, and execute God’s ideas and dreams. We should seek God’s endorsement before rushing out to execute any idea. Not every idea is God’s idea, so it is important to consecrate our plans, ideas, and dreams to Him. Seek confirmation through a book, chapter, and verse (BCV) along with a witness from the Holy Spirit and godly counsel. If it is God’s idea, He will fund it and bless it, but if it is our idea without consecration, we will need to fund it ourselves.
Many pursue their own plans, expect God to bless and rescue them if necessary, and feel disappointed when He doesn’t. But God is not obliged to bless them when He wasn’t even consulted, and we are in no position to tell God what to do for us or to expect Him to bless our plans. God will lead us as He led David, and He will cause us to succeed if we are willing to submit to His plan.
Reflection: When you make decisions, do you first seek Him to find out if it is His plan for you? What helps you discern the difference between His plan and your own desires?
