There Can Only be One Head
ICS Daily Devotions

1 Corinthians 11:3 (NKJV) But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

Ephesians 5:23-24 (NKJV) For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Saviour of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

If we want to experience a blessed marriage, we must remember the divine order of God, Christ, man, and woman. We are not advocating that women are of lesser worth and significance than men, or have no voice, rights, or standing, but that this is the order that God has put in place. In the context of the home, the woman’s position is after the man.

While women should have equal salaries to men, have the right to vote, a voice in society, and be protected, feminist advocacy should never be brought into the home. It would only introduce chaos because God did not ordain the woman to take leadership in the family. Even if the woman comes from a matriarchal culture, her attitude can change if she is saved and lives under the teachings of the Bible.

The first feminist movement began in the Garden of Eden when Eve’s desire arose and she conversed with the devil about eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. She usurped the role that belonged to her husband, Adam, thus creating tension between their God-given roles. The leadership of Adam and the willing submission of Eve were God’s original intention at creation, and Eve was created to be a helpmate, a role that complements her husband rather than competes with him. God’s order for the family is that the man should lead the wife. For the good of the home and the family, the Christian couple should adopt and accept this order.

Here are the possible scenarios in some families today:

The wife is the head of the house; the husband is passive.
The husband is trying to be the head of the household, but faces significant resistance from the wife. She wants equal rights and may even undermine his leadership.
There are two heads in the house. Thus, the home is marked by confusion, strife, anger, tension, and bitterness.
The husband is the head of the house, and he has a submissive and supportive wife. There is peace, love, and joy in the home.
There must always be only one head in every organisation or body in order for it to function well.
