Main Passage: Matthew 20:26-28, 1 Timothy 3:14-15

Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Matthew 20:26-28 (NKJV)

  1. What is your view on God and Jesus experiencing the same leadership challenges as us? Why are churches experiencing the same followership issues today? What are some behavioural patterns on followership? How can we change these behaviours? In what ways?
    (Rom 1:11-12, 3:23; Ja 3:16; Pro 14:30; Matt 26:40; Lk 9:32; Gal 5:17-21; Col 3:1-4; Heb 10:24-25)
  2. Tony Cooke said, “Good leadership can’t achieve optimum results without good followership.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Share your thoughts. Do you consider yourself a good follower? Which do you struggle most, leadership or followership? Why is unity in the supportive ministry a priority to God?
    (Deut 11:26-28; Ex 18:17-18; Num 11:11-12, 14-15; 1 Sam 15:22; Jos 24:15; Jn 4:34; 1 Jn 2:5; Phi 2:19-21)
  3. What do you understand by the old saying, “It’s lonely at the top?” Do you think it applies only to those people at the top? Why or why not? Have you encountered loneliness as a leader? How do you deal with it? How can you help your pastor in carrying out the vision God has put in her heart?
    (Ps 23:3, 40:1-5; Pro 18:24; Jn 15:15; Matt 11:28-30; 28:20; Phi 2:3-4; 1 Cor 1:9; Heb 13:5-6)
